      Becky Edmunds is curating a month of events that draw on film, dance and visual art practices. In this month the programme will look to respond to the idea of (considering) choreography as an expanded field, and as an activity that can be viewed separately to dance. It will explore how choreography can be found in a range of screen work, and not just work that can easily be recognised as screen dance. At the heart of this curation will be a chance to see works from the recent What If…festival, which took place in London earlier this year. There will be live performance by Fiona Wright within a video installation at The Basement, plus a series of screenings and talks at The Nightingale Theatre, including a chance to hear from the seminal filmmaker John Smith. There will be two workshops for artists who are working in screen-based practices, and plenty of opportunities to meet and talk with practitioners from a diverse range of practices.

      upcoming events

      • Crossing the Stage… and other scores :: Matteo Fargion :: Nov 2010

        A two day composition workshop focussing on what happens when ideas and techniques which come from music are applied to movement. The sessions will consist of short task-based exercises, involving score writing, and conversations about making work.
      • ‘Thinking About Pocahontas and Me (Fourth Version)‘ :: Becky Edmunds & Fiona Wright :: Nov 2010

        Performance by Fiona Wright and Becky Edmunds Co-programmed by South East Dance and The Basement. This started with the legend of Pocahontas and her sailing across an ocean to London, c. 1617. Something about remembering learning history from encyclopedias and the feeling of early memories of reading as if they were stored in your body like keys to the secrets of time travel...
      • What If… :: Various Artists :: Nov 2010

        In April of 2010, the What if... festival took place at the Siobhan Davies Studios in London. The festival responded through the perspective of dance artists working with the moving image, to recent thinking about choreography as an expanded field – of the choreographic as something that can be separated from dance and dancing and that involves unique ways of thinking to do with structure and a sense of embodiment. Throughout the weekend, a selection of film and video works from the What if... festival will be sited at The Nightingale Theatre.
      • ‘Composing the Screen’ :: Lucy Cash and Becky Edmunds :: Nov 2010

        A two day practical screendance workshop that responds to recent thinking about choreography as an expanded field - of the choreographic as something that can be separated from dance and dancing and that involves unique ways of thinking to do with structure and a sense of embodiment. We will explore composition through a series of creative exercises with and without a camera, as well as through discussion around examples of screen based works. Participants should bring their own camera. Lucy Cash and Becky Edmunds are two independent artists with moving image practices, who both have a background in dance and performance. £80. To book, email becky.edmunds@googlemail.com
